MILWAUKEE COLLEGES OF ENGINEERING PARTNERSHIP RECEIVES HELEN BADER FOUNDATION GRANT FOR HIGH SCHOOL MACHINE CONTEST
The Milwaukee Colleges of Engineering Partnership, which includes five area colleges and universities and Discovery World Museum, has received a $10,000 grant from the Helen Bader Foundation to help support both the Wisconsin State Rube Goldberg Machine-Building Contest™© and the regional and national competitions held in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Colleges of Engineering and Technology Partnership consists of the colleges of engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and Marquette University, and also the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Waukesha County Technical College and Discovery World Museum.
The grant will be used to offset some of the cost of hosting this event, which involves about 35 high schools from around Wisconsin and more than a dozen from other states. The 2005 events will be held at Wisconsin State Fair Park Exposition Center on Friday, April 29.
The universities have come together to host the contests with the aim of increasing the supply of young people prepared in high school to enter post-secondary studies in technology, engineering, science and computer science.
The competitions are named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and engineer who became famous for his cartoons of overly complicated machines designed to accomplish something simple. Students use innovation, creativity, engineering and technology skills to their maximum potential, while having fun and working as a team.
The events are designed not only to attract more middle and high school students to engineering and technology careers, but also to provide academic and professional opportunities at all levels for women, minorities, and financially or educationally disadvantaged students.
Students are housed at the Tommy Thompson Youth Center located on the State Fair Park’s grounds.
The Milwaukee-based Helen Bader Foundation, Inc. supports innovative projects and programs that advance the well-being of people and promote successful relationships with their families and communities. The Foundation has awarded more than $129 million in grants since it was established in 1992.
